Fredricksburg, TX

While we were in San Antonio our friend AJ from Sassafras Bakery in Columbus, Ohio came down to spend a couple days with us. She wanted to go to a bakery in Fredricksburg.

So we all went to Rather Sweet Bakery and Cafe. Mia had the Rubuen Sandwich you see in the top picture. Everything is made fresh and on site.

We ate a ridiculous amount of sweets and treats from the Rather Sweet Bakery.

Walking around town

We also spent several hours walking around town, shopping, and just relaxing in this quaint village.

AJ also got a recommendation for a Pie Shop just a few roads over from the bakery so we walked over and tried it too! YUMMY!

BBQ San Antonio

This is the Bar-B-Que place Deputy Dog from the Natural Bridge and Caverns recommended for us to stop and eat at. It was a small building with a few seats inside, but we choose to eat outside on the picnic tables and enjoy the sun.

All their ingredients are natural and with no preservatives. Everything is made fresh everyday and you could tell. It was amazing! Delicious, and a great atmosphere. 

The woman in the picture above is the owner, she was telling me about how she'd just bought the business this past year from some firemen and she was loving it. That's how the Bar-B-Que place got its name "Bucket Brigade" because the original owners being firemen.

They don't have a website or I'd site it here, you can Google it and find it on yelp, yellow pages and sites like that.

San Antonio Natural Bridge and Caverns

Just north of San Antonio is a natural bridge and caverns. So one morning we decided to head up there and check it out.

The tour we took lasted about an hour, just a little over. It was very interesting. We learned the caverns stay a constant temperature and humidity level all year long. 70 degrees with 99% humidity.

After the tour we were getting ready to leave when the security officer came over to talk for a while. He gave us a wonderful recommendation for lunch (you'll read about that soon).

He was happy to pose with AJ, from Sassafras Bakery and me.  I requested a picture because he was so nice and fun, his name is Deputy Dog! How fun is that!

San Antonio the Mission

     What San Antonio has a lot of is Missions. 

The missions were built in the 18th century by the Spanish, the missions were a way to expand into their country by converting local Indians. The Missions were a reminder of church and state, since they did not have a separation of the two. There are five Missions in San Antonio with in the national parks site. You do have to drive to each of them. Seeing the missions could take a day or longer if you wanted to do tours at each and really walk all the grounds.

The Alamo is of course the most famous of all the missions in San Antonio. And is the easiest to see since it's down town. However in my opinion it is not the prettiest or most interesting. Plus you have to put up with a TON of other tourists. As you travel the missions route there is fewer and fewer tourists at each one.  I would encourage everyone to visit all the missions, even if it is just to run in and take pictures. They are beautiful.

San Antonio River Walk

Before we got to San Antonio EVERYONE talked about the Riverwalk. So the first thing we did is go to the Riverwalk.

It pretty much was a sidewalk next to a river that is one story below street level. You walk along the sidewalk enjoying the river and solitude in some areas of the Riverwalk. In other areas there are restaurants with outdoor eating areas.

It is a nice area of town, but not my favorite thing about San Antonio. You'll read about that in the next few days.
