This Iwo Jima Moument is designed after a very famous photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal. The photograph won the hearts of many Americans during WWII. Two days after the Senate saw the photo they decided to have it made into a monument. And with in 72 hours of the sculptor seeing it he had his model ready. It was designed by Felix DeWeldon. After the Monument was made in Washington, this model sat in storage till the 1980's when Felix donated it to the Academy in Harlingen, TX, where it now sits across from the parade grounds.
It is an amazing monument, huge and detailed. The bronze sculpture that is made from this model is at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Definitely a must see if you're in the area.
